MahaBharatam - Saaswata Satyalu
During the VanaVaasam in MahaBharatam, Markandeya Maharshi visits Pandavas. Markandeya Maharshi is one of the seven Chirajeevis(eternal beings). He prescribes the following to Yudhishter referring to Bakadaalbya Maharshi's teaching to Indra.
1. Trying to stay friendly with people whom you dislike causes sorrow
2. Staying away from people whom you love causes sorrow
3. Stay away from bad company*** I think this is the most important rule.
4. Never borrow
5. Take vegetarian food in the afternoon
6. Do not talk egotistically
7. Never bad-mouth others
These seem to be common sense and very simple prescription for happiness.
